Bir çok fanatiğine göre X-Men 1986 yılından beri oto pilot’da yol alıyor.
Bir zamanların muhteşem kitabı çoktan anlamını yitirmiş, artık sadece
okunmak için okunuyordu. Arada sırada kaale alınacak hikayeler vardı ama
bunlar yine de serinin altın yıllarını yansıtmıyordu.
Hepimizin 80’lerde bildiği o meşhur Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm Kitty Pride,
Nightcrawler, Beast, Rogue, Collossus ve de Wolverine’den kurulu o grup
gitmiş, yerine artık yabancı yüzler, başarısız karakterler gelmişti. Taa ki
2004 yılında Marvel Joss Whedon’un kapısını çalana kadar.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ı seyredenler bilir, serinin yaratıcısı Whedon
X-Men’den gerek diyalog gerek hikaye olarak çok şeyden esinlenmiş hatta bazı
bölümlerde bunu alenen yapmıştır. (Willow’un psikopata bağlanıp güçlerine
hakim olamayarak çığlık attığı bir sahnede, karakterlerden biri dönüp meşhur
“Dude, she is like Dark Phoenix” lafını sarfeder).
Whedon’in yazdığı Gifted hikayesi senelerdir o çocukluk ya da gençliklerinde
okumak istedikleri ve bir türlü yeni nesil yazarlarda bulamadıkları
hikayeyi, karakterleri ve en önemlisi diyaloğu beraberinde getirdi.
Hikayenin sonlarında Wolverine’in Collossus’a dönüp sinsi bir gülümseme ile,
"Then I just got two words for you" dediği sahnenin ertesindeki hareket, ki
sahne kendisini yazar bu laftan sonra X-Men’i 80’lerde okuyan insanlara
tarifi imkansız, tüyleri diken diken eden bir sahne yaşatıyor. Daha siz
sayfayı çevirmeden 20 senedir görmediğiniz "Fastball Special" geliyor,
biliyorsunuz...
Özellikle 20 senedir X-Men okumuyorsanız ya da okuduğunuzda aradığınızı
bulamayorsanız, Gifted hikayesini Amazon’dan ısmarlayın,
inanamayacaksınız.

2004 yılının sonunda patlayan bu hikaye hakkında internet üzerinden bazı
kritikler:
"The emotional response, if you hadn't already figured it out by now, is
wonderful. As a long time fan, I love it. I loaned the issues to a friend
whose only exposure to the team is through the movies, and she loves it.
This captures everything that's great about the X-Men, and it's all right
here. I love this arc, and want more now. I give it 6 out of 6."

"Has Astonishing X-Men: Gifted been overhyped? Almost certainly. Whedon's
approach to Astonishing X-Men is an impressive blend of staying absolutely
true to the characters and their stories and giving them a fresh,
approachable shine. The moment to moment writing, as you'd expect, is
terrific. Kitty Pryde returning to the school as a teacher and liaison
between older faculty and the students is such a natural role for her
character that it should have been done years ago. The bickering
relationship between Kitty and Emma is fantastic, and is second only to
Whedon's take on the Cyclops and Wolverine relationship, which is more
interesting here than it has ever been. To my mind, Astonishing X-Men:
Gifted is not a great comic, but it is an exceptionally good one, and it is
going to leave impressions on the memories of X-fans like myself for years
to come. 8/10"
