1987 yılında Alan Moore yeni bitirdiği Watchmen kitabı için imza gününe gider. İmza için gelen okurların, kendisinin süratına bakamadığına ve hiç konuşmadıklarına dikkat eder. Hayatımda okuduğum diğer hiç bir eser beni yazarına bu derece saygı ve neredeyse korku diyebileceğim bir saygı uyandırmadı. Alan Moore bu kitabı yazdı.

Watchmen nedir, ne değildir? Watchmen herşeyden önce ağır bir eserdir. Lord of the Rings misali denilebilir. Çok komplikedir, o kadar ki ilk 3 okuyuşta konuyu tamamen kavramak imkansız olduğu gibi, kitabın sonunu tahmin etmek de imkansızdır denilebilir. Her satır, her kare bir şey ifade eder. Watchmen bir “dedektiflik” hikayesidir. Ortada bir cinayet vardır, ve kurbanın yakın dostları bu cinayeti aydınlatmak için olayı araştırmaya başlarlar.
